The Need To Sleep Well, Live Better
Nearly 50 million Americans chronically suffer from sleep problems.

The National Sleep Foundation 2008 Sleep in America Poll found adults reported the following occurred at least a few nights a week:

  • 65% of adults reported experiencing a sleep disorder
  • 42% of adults report having symptoms of insomnia
  • 33% of adults report that they snore
  • 15% of adults report unpleasant or uncomfortable feelings in their legs

This poll also found that longer work days are causing Americans to doze on the job, behind the wheel, and in the company of their spouses:

  • 29% of adults report falling asleep at work
  • 36% of adults report falling asleep while driving
  • 20% of adults report losing interest in sex because they are too sleepy

There are 84 recognized and distinct sleep disorders, most of which can be treated. And research has found that if you are under the care of a Board Certified Sleep Medicine physician, you are more likely to be satisfied with this care and more compliant with therapy.

Some of the most common sleep disorders are:

Obstructive Sleep Apnea –obstructed breathing while you are asleep which causes episodes of struggling to breathe and interrupted sleep
Insomnia – inability to fall asleep or to remain asleep
Restless Leg Syndrome – uncomfortable feeling in your arms/legs before or during sleep

If untreated, sleep apnea may contribute to:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease including heart attacks and abnormal heart rhythms
  • Stroke
  • Weight gain
  • Memory problems
  • Impotency
  • Headaches
  • Depression
  • Trouble with blood sugar control

As recently reported in U.S. News and World Report, 10 reasons not to skimp on sleep:

1.  For people who sleep less than 7 hours a night, the fewer zzz’s you get, the more obese you tend to be.
2.  People with untreated obstructive sleep apnea tend to eat diets higher in cholesterol and fat.
3.  People who get 5 or fewer hours of sleep per night may be more at risk for developing diabetes.
4.  The risk of having a heart attack is higher if you sleep less than 5 hours per night.
5.  Untreated sleep apnea is one known cause of high blood pressure.
6.  Nearly 20% of serious car crashes involve a sleepy driver.
7.  Older adults who sleep poorly are more likely to fall.
8.  Adults who chronically operate on fumes report more mental distress, depression, and alcohol use.
9.  Children who are plagued by insomnia, short duration of sleeping, or disordered breathing with obesity, for example, are more likely to have behavioral issues like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
10.  Those who get five hours or less per night have approximately 15 percent greater risk of dying.
